HPC RIVR Supercomputer

Podravska Region

Areas of application

Research data retention: Establish an efficient hardware and service infrastructure for open research data (with our own original solutions for accessing research data).

Hybrid Infrastructure: The HPC RIVR includes the establishment of a Hybrid Infrastructure Support Center, where software can be installed and integrated into operations in the form of virtualized containers or environmentally independent packages, which enables the integration of systems with other forms and technologies, such as on-demand services and cloud infrastructures, e.g. Slovenian development cloud, infrastructure systems such as Kubernetes, as well as the use of the same systems in the domestic environment by individual researchers, institutions and economic entities.

High-throughput computing (HTC) integration and local repositories, which will enable research, development and use in the most technologically advanced areas, requiring a combination of supercomputing, big data, dispersed network computing and open scientific repositories.

Life sciences: Support for state-of-the-art methods in the field of life sciences and genomics with appropriate support for protection and permanent data storage in the context of medical research and diagnostics is key to promoting very successful activities in Slovenia in the field of modeling cellular processes such as aging, degenerative diseases , e.g. Alzheimer’s disease, metastasis processes of cancerous formations with early stages of drug development, and diagnosis and development of targeted therapies of personalized medicine; the same methods will strongly encourage existing research in the field of zoology, ecology, medical image processing, development of new diagnostic methods in medicine, etc.

Artificial Intelligence: Development and research in the field of machine learning, artificial intelligence of language technologies, image recognition, deep learning, advanced machine modeling and analytics, and data mining with big data.

Information security: In the field of data protection, secure transaction systems and blockchains, low-latency communication in the context of stock exchange operations and market modeling, financial analysis and modeling and development of anonymisation systems and encrypted secure data storage, the infrastructure will enable experimental deployments, the use of broadband and close cooperation between research organizations and industry in sharing a state-of-the-art environment that which will be similar in architecture to the solutions envisaged in the next generation of large European supercomputers, which, among other things, address these issues.

The investment is co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia,  Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund.
