Demystifying High Performance Computing in Tourism

On Friday, November 10, 2023, the seminar Demystifying High Performance Computing in Tourism was held as part of EDIH DIGI-SI. Lecturer at the seminar, doc. dr. Domen Verber, head of the Laboratory for Real-Time Systems at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics of the University of Maribor, presented how High-Performance Computing (HPC) can be used in various areas of the tourism industry and in creating a good experience for tourists. He presented an overview of HPC concepts, tools, and techniques, with a special emphasis on their use in tourism, examples of good practices and existing solutions in this area, and potential opportunities offered by HPC technology in the future. Demystifying IoT in Agrifood: Digitization in Support of Precision Agriculture

On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, as part of EDIH DIGI-SI, we organized a seminar Demystifying IoT in agrifood: Digitization in support of precision agriculture. The seminar’s lecturer, a researcher from the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences of the University of Maribor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jurij Rakun, first outlined the basic concepts of digitization and its connection with the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to the participants, and then presented how IoT is connected to agriculture. The seminar also touched on the topics of sensor systems and robotics, and as always, it also included the presentation of good practices in the field. On Monday, October 23, 2023, the seminar Demystification of artificial intelligence in medicine and healthcare was held as part of EDIH DIGI-SI, conducted by the founder and head of the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Maribor, Prof. Dr. Vili Podgorelec. At the seminar, the participants got an insight into the importance of data science and the basic ideas and concepts of machine learning, which is one of the key areas of artificial intelligence. In the foreground were the mechanisms of artificial intelligence, which the lecturer presented using practical and interesting examples. Online tutorial: “Best Practices for CernVM-FS in HPC”

On Monday, 4 December 2023 (13:30-17:00 CET) online introductory tutorial on CernVM-FS will be held via Zoom. Tutorial was developed in collaboration with with the CernVM-FS development team. CernVM-FS, the CernVM File System (also known as CVMFS), is a file distribution service that is particularly well suited to distribute software installations across a large number of systems world-wide in an efficient way. The focus of this tutorial is on explaining what CernVM-FS is, how to access existing CernVM-FS repositories (like EESSI), and covering some aspects specific to using CernVM-FS on HPC systems. It is intended for people with a background in HPC (system administrators, support team members, end users, etc.) who are new to CernVM-FS: no specific prior knowledge or experience with it is required. MultiXscale, in collaboration with CASTIEL 2 WP3 presents an event aimed at the Center of Excellence, the National Competence Center, their network and the end user. The event will take place online on December 5, 2023, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m CET. Have you ever wished that all the scientific software you use was available on all the resources you had access to without having to go through the pain of getting them installed the way you want/need? The European Environment for Scientific Software Installations (EESSI – pronounced “easy”) is a common stack of architecture-optimised scientific software installations for HPC systems and beyond, including laptops, personal workstations, and cloud infrastructure. At the training you will learn what EESSI is, how it is designed, how to gain access to it and how to use it. On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, a demytifing seminar on cyber security technologies will be held from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The development of information technologies and the Internet means an ever-increasing amount of data and digital services, which brings the challenges of cyber security. Ensuring cyber security includes both technical and non-technical aspects. As part of the seminar, we will focus on the concepts and technologies of cyber security, which are often misunderstood or not known at all. Various aspects of cyber security will be presented as part of the seminar. The basics of cryptography will be presented, with which we want to dispel the mystery surrounding the technologies that are the basis of many security mechanisms. The use of cryptography is also related to digital certificates and public key infrastructure. We will explain concepts such as electronic signature, digital certificate, SIGEN-CA, eOsebna, etc. and possibilities of use in practice.
